Join us for the Gwinnett County Kwanzaa 2024: Celebrating Ujima and Ujamaa Principles. Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African-American culture that takes place from December 26 to January 1 of each year.
Kwanzaa celebrates African American history, values, family, and community. It's based on African harvest festival traditions and the philosophy of Kawaida, which defines culture as a key component in people's development.
The Gwinnett County Kwanzaa Celebration: Ujima and Ujamma 2024 takes place on Saturday, December 28, 2024 from 12:30 - 4 p.m. at the Gwinnett County Public Library - Duluth Branch, located at 3180 Main St, Duluth, GA 30096. It is a wonderful family-friendly event.
Ujima: Ujima is a Kwanzaa principle that means "collective work and responsibility" in Swahili. It's celebrated on the third day of Kwanzaa, December 28th. Ujima is based on the idea that communities can achieve more together than they could individually. It also emphasizes that African freedom is indivisible, and that when one African person is oppressed, all African people are.
Ujamaa: Ujamaa is a Swahili word that translates to "cooperative economics" and is the fourth principle of Kwanzaa. It's a principle that emphasizes the economic togetherness of the African-American community. Ujamaa is celebrated on the fourth day of Kwanzaa, which is December 29th.Ujamaa is based on the idea that social wealth belongs to the people who created it and that no one should have so much wealth that they can impose unequal, exploitative, or oppressive relations on others.
